VIENTIANE, May 22 (Xinhua) -- As part of its digital transformation efforts, the Lao government is steadily integrating technology into public administration and services, guided by a national strategy focused on building a digital government, economy, and society, while the private sector also moves increasingly online.
The Lao government is actively partnering with several countries to advance digital technology, focusing on integrating information and communication technology (ICT) into education nationwide to support its digital transformation.
The Ministry of Technology and Communications has implemented tools like e-Office, G-Chat, and G-Drive to streamline government operations. Additionally, officials are urged to strengthen management efforts to tackle economic and social challenges through the use of digital technologies.
Daopakaiy, a 19-year-old student, appreciates the government's efforts in digital transformation, particularly the introduction of digital identity cards and online services that will enhance convenience and efficiency in daily life.
"This is a great step forward for Laos, especially as it helps modernize services and make them more accessible. I believe these changes will improve people's livelihoods. While these efforts will benefit urban areas, it's important to expand these services to rural areas as well," Daopakaiy told Xinhua on Thursday.
She also emphasized the need for digital literacy programs to help older generations adapt to new technologies, ensuring that everyone can equally benefit from the transformation.
The Lao Ministry of Technology and Communications is conducting a feasibility study on developing Lao national blockchain and digital assets to support its digital economy goals, generate new government revenue, and cultivate expertise in connected data technology and digital assets.
Amid the rapid growth of e-commerce, a clothing seller on an online platform expressed optimism about the Lao government's digital transformation efforts, particularly in the e-commerce sector.
"With more people shopping online, it creates opportunities for Lao products to reach customers across the country, not just in Lao capital Vientiane. I believe these efforts will truly help boost our local economy," said Manichanh.
Sengphet, a resident of Lao capital Vientiane, said digital transformation is improving daily life by making services, access to information, and government processes faster and more convenient. He believes it also helps bridge the gap between urban and rural areas by expanding access to education, healthcare, and official documentation.
"I think it's important for Laos to invest in technology and in developing people's skills in this sector. Digital transformation can help us grow our economy, improve public services, and create more opportunities for everyone," he added.
